Tobacco

The use of tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death and illness in this country, and the vast majority of smokers begin tobacco use before the age of 20. In Illinois, nearly 30 percent of high school students smoke, 34,800 kids (under 18) become new daily smokers each year, and there are at least 773,000 kids who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home.* While most adults and adolescents know that smoking and environmental tobacco smoke is harmful and want to quit smoking, they need help and encouragement from a respected source (ie physician), and primary care physicians are well positioned to provide this support.

PROGRAM MATERIALS AND PUBLICATIONS

ICAAP and its partners have produced new and exciting materials available to the primary care provider:

  • Consensus from an Expert Panel: Prepared by experts in adolescent medicine and tobacco use, this 8-page guideline summarizes the problem, risk factors, intervention methods and treatment options. It was used as a syllabus at all first year educational presentations. Click here to download copy of the ICAAP/Illinois Academy of Family Physicians published guideline.
  • Monograph: The 92-page monograph expands greatly on subjects covered in the consensus guideline and includes four fully-referenced chapters and a removable treatment card. It is now used as the syllabus at all educational presentations.
